People from along the Gila River from the headwaters in New Mexico to the confluence with the Colorado River in Yuma, AZ, will gather on Sunday, September 22 at 10 am at Mogollon Box to bless the Gila River. Led by elders from the Chiricahua Apache Nation and with dancing by the Fort Sill Apache Dancers with the Gooday Family, our prayers will be devoted to protection of the sacred Gila River.
Directions to the Gila River ceremony from Silver City, NM: take Hwy 180 west toward the town of Gila. There are two turnoffs to Hwy 211. Pass the first one and continue toward Cliff. Turn right onto Hwy 211. You’ll pass the Cliff School on your left and head over a hill. At the bottom of this hill, bear left on Hwy 293, aka Box Canyon Rd. After about 5 miles, the road turns to dirt and you enter the Gila National Forest. The road dead-ends at the Mogollon Box Day Use Area.
Please carpool out to the river.
