Our River, Our Future

The Gila Conservation Coalition will be hosting the 15th Annual Gila River Festival’s Gila River Extravaganza at Gough Park from 4:00 pm to 10:00 pm. The Extravaganza will begin with a Monsoon Puppet Theater parade, and will feature live music with two bands - Auld Lang Syne and Caliente, many interactive kid, youth, and family-oriented activities, the San Carlos Apache Singers and Dancers, and the Fort Sill Apache Fire Dancers.

This year we’re exploring the future of the Gila River in relation to the changing climate, as well as our responsibility to act as responsible earth stewards. We are already experiencing the effects of climate disruption here in southwest New Mexico. Over the past fifteen years, we’ve seen historically low flows on the Gila River affecting the ecological health of New Mexico’s last wild river.

Recognizing that the most vulnerable communities are already being impacted by climate disruption, how do we address climate justice? What can we do as concerned citizens to live more simply, consume less, and reduce our carbon footprint? How can we cultivate joy and incorporate gratitude into our daily lives so that we experience abundance and thankfulness rather than the feeling of always needing more?

We invite you to join us for the 15th Annual Gila River Festival’s Extravaganza to share your climate change-related information, goods and services with your community and visitors from all over the world. We encourage you to offer interactive events at your booth that engage visitors of all ages, especially children and youth.

Set up will begin at 3:00 pm. Booth assignments will be marked in chalk on the sidewalks. Each organization must supply its own table, chairs and canopy, if needed. Canopies should be secured with weights in case of winds.

If you need electricity, please indicate it on the registration form and we will locate you near an electrical outlet; however, you will need to bring an extension cord.

If you need water you will need to provide your own water hose. Make note of other special requests (shade, sun, water, etc.) on the form and we will do our best to accommodate you.

Please contact Doyne at earthendoyne@gmail.com or call 575- 297-9734 with any questions.

We look forward to working with you to make this a wonderful Extravaganza!
